Is your car looking rather grimy or even downright filthy? Then it’s time to give that vehicle a bath! You might drive it through the car wash, but if you want a truly shiny, bright clean, then take the time to wash your car thoroughly by hand. Try a few of the following tips to help you get started.
Gather Your Supplies
First, you’ll need to gather the right supplies. Start with a soap that is specifically designed for washing cars. Don’t use dish soap; it can actually scrub wax and even paint right off your car. So whether you have a top new CDJR for sale on the market these days or an old jalopy, treat it right with a car wash soap.
You should also pick up a microfiber wash mitt or sponge. Better yet, get two, one for the car’s body and another for the wheels. Have a soft cloth on hand, too, to wipe off the initial layer of dirt and debris so that nothing scratches your car’s surface. You’ll also need at least two buckets, one for soapy water and another to rinse the mitt or sponge.
Find the Right Time
You’ll have to find the right time to wash your car. Don’t wash when your car is warm, either after you’ve driven it or if it has been sitting in the sun. Wait until it cools, or you may have an issue with soapy water drying on your car too quickly and creating splotches and streaks.
Master Your Technique
You may be surprised to learn that there is a proper technique for car washing, and if you want your car to turn out bright and shiny, you should master it. Begin by rinsing the car thoroughly and brushing away any dirt that could scratch. Then, starting from the top, wash small areas with soapy water and the microfiber mitt or sponge. Don’t move in circles because that can scratch, but do rinse each area before moving on.
When you’ve washed the whole car, give it a good rinse with a hose, letting the water run from the top down in a cleansing sheet. You can then turn your attention to the tires and clean those with soapy water and a separate mitt or sponge.
Dry and Wax
When you’re all finished, dry your car thoroughly with a microfiber towel. Don’t skip this step or think you can just drive around the block a couple times to air dry the vehicle. Drying your car by hand will allow you to give it a good polish and make sure you’ve removed all the dirt and streaks.
Finally, apply a coat of wax. Follow the directions carefully, and apply the wax evenly. Then use a microfiber towel to wipe down the car.
